Day 5 Yellowstone Expedition 2011 July 11, 2011

We left Dubois as soon as we could because we were anxious to get to the Park.  Bryan drove because he wanted to drive into the Park.  The drive from Dubois to the Park finally gets into some high altitude forest.

From the south entrance to Canyon Village is about 60 miles.  It takes longer to travel in the Park because the highest speed limit is 45 mph.  Of course there are the stops when you just have to get out and look at something.  And there are the traffic jams. Yes, there are traffic jams. Whenever there is an animal by the road, people are going to stop to look at it. Even if you do not get out yourself and join them, you will come to a complete stop.  But you are on vacation, so what's your hurry?

We eventually made it to Canyon Village, our home for the next few days.  The next task was to set up camp.  Then we headed out to see the Visitor's Center.

By the time that was finished and supper cooked, it was time to sit around the old campfire.  We did not sit around long.  It started to rain and hail. That sent us scurrying into the protection of our tents.

It rained for a while that night.  I do not know how long it rained.  Once I was convinced that the tent was not leaking too badly, I fell asleep.  The Bufords were in the new one because it is bigger.

And that was the end of the first day of being in Yellowstone. Snuggled in a warm sleeping bag, listening to rain on the tent.
