To begin, let me say that I am not advocating anything. I am just putting down why I have decided not to use FaceBook any longer. I am not saying anybody else should leave or stay. Decide for yourself.
My reasons fall into two categories. The first is due to what FaceBook is and is trying to become. The other is the what people are posting or not posting.
Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder, CEO, and president of FB can not be trusted. He has betrayed us several times in the past. When FB first started everything was private. Then without telling us, he reversed it. Everything you posted was available to the world. Sure, they have improved it a couple of weeks ago. But hey, the horse is out of the barn.
Zuckerberg is also trying to control the internet through FB. When I go to a website, I do not want the work I am doing on a website shared with my FB account. And if there is a like button, why don't I get a chance to not like something.
PC World (July 2010) just reported on a hacker named Kirllos who is selling FB usernames and passwords. For $25 - $45 (depending on the number of contacts) you can get 1000 account credentials. This was discovered by Verisign's iDefense. FB has not responded to requests for comments. Really? Come FB let us know what you know.
Your data may end up being used by a credit agency, health care providers, and future employers. Rapleaf, a California based company, is harvesting data from social networks to provide information to financial institutions. be careful what you post, it may cost you your next loan.
Let's move on. The next category is the people on FB. Those who have a political agenda are surfing the internet to find anything that supports their viewpoint. When those golden nuggets are found they are posted and reposted over and over. It does not matter if the information being posted is true or not. The only criteria is if it fits the poster's philosophy or not. I have two requests for the political experts out there. try to have an original idea and check your sources.
And then there are the sappily married. I get it your happy. So are a lot us. The post are so sweet they set my teeth on edge and make my stomach hurt.
When the same things are said over and over, the sincerity of the sentiments come into question. They just sound trite and shallow. Let's remember that when we talk about our religious views. Yes God is great and Christ is my savior, but the platitudes all sound the same.
Stop sending me things that do not exists. I have yet to see any of those animals that people have claimed wandered on my farm to actually be there. Go play farmville, Zynga only made $250 million last year. They are are hoping you spend more in 2010 buying things that are only virtual.
There are people who I like to keep track of on a regular basis. I"ll figure out a way to do that. There are FB replacements looming on the horizon.
For those of you who I haven't offended or managed to po, you can still keep track of me. I plan to post here on a regular basis. I am also on Twitter @ibnup. Call me at (903) 253-0118 or e-mail me at NupsBlog@gmail.com. You can even stop by and visit face to face. What a novel idea.
Bye
