This was our last full day in Colorado. Anita said she wanted to wallow in the mountains. So we decided to go on a good long hike. Fortunately for me, I have a wife who's addiction to hiking trails is as strong as mine and shows no sign of abating.
We decided to hike the Bear Creek Trail. The trail head is located about two mile from our cabin. So we loaded up the backpacks and headed out.
The trail starts in a parking lot and crosses the Dolores river via a bridge. It goes into an aspen grove and begins to climb through a series of switch backs. The climb is not difficult, even for a pair of old flatlanders.
The trail eventually starts following Bear Creek. We kept catching glimpses of the creek below us. Whenever possible, we would step off the trail to stand at the edge of rock outcroppings to admire the scenery.
We saw many birds and hoped we would see some larger animals. Anita did step over a snake of some sort without seeing it. But it was sluggish from the cool morning and did nothing but lay by the trail while I took it's picture.
We did see some marmots in a meadow towards the end of our hike. Two of them chirp warnings as we walked towards them. It was amazing how clear and piercing the chirps were.
I would say that we walked a total of six miles by the time we returned to the trail head. We were pleasantly wore out and completely satisfied with the trail.
Leah and Chris left later today to be sure they were back in Las Vegas in time to catch their flight. They were excited about getting home because they are getting a new puppy.
It was the perfect way to spend our last day here.
