Some of Them Just Do Not Get It

I meant to, but evidently I forgot. Here it is: mylittlecorner.embarqspace.com. Thanks Kelly.

I had a student tell me today that he did not need to be in the Cognitive Intervention Program. This is a class designed to help people learn the connection between thoughts, actions, and consequences. It gives them skills to analyse their thinking styles and how to change to get their thinking to get what they want out of life.

This guy told me had been locked up numerous times and that is the way it was going to be. You can not change if you do not want to change. This is true. He went on to tell me that he would probably get in trouble when the guards and teachers told him what to. He complained about how people who had so many troubles of their own and were obviously less intelligent than he was were the ones in charge and the ones who always got their way. He hated living this way.

I tried to explain to him that if he wanted to get out of this situation he had to change himself. No way that was going to happen. He just kept telling me that he knew who he was and he would always come back to prison.

I was about to tell him that he did not to make the effort to learn a different way of dealing with life, then he would just have to accept whatever life handed him because it was of his own creation. But before I got to say any of that, he said we were just a cult and he had no more to say.

I wish I could say that this was a rare incident, but it is not. I run into too  many offenders with this attitude. They complain about how they hate being in prison and then glorify the lifestyle that brings them. Some can not way to get back into the World to pick up where they left off. They just do not get it. The man walking out of those gates must be different than the man who walked into them. If not, we will get another chance to help him when he comes back.

I could go on, but my meds are kicking in. Soon my writing will become mere gibberish. More so than at present.
